If one can only spend a day in Sulphur, Louisiana, don't miss out on the best burger and public pool in the state.

Sulpher, Louisiana is a small city boasting a population of less than 25,000 people. While it may be small, anyone who drives through it can see that it is a fine place to live or visit.

For those who visit only for a day, be sure not to miss two great attractions:

  • SPAR
  • Winkydoo's Malt Shoppe

SPAR: the Best Public Pool Ever

For those who enjoy unique public parks, be prepared to be amazed. Sulphur has SPAR, a water park open to the public and with low costs to those who do not live in the immediate area.

SPAR is really just a public pool to the locals, but for outsiders it is so much more. Toddlers rule half the water with their play area full of little slides coming from the water playground as water shoots up and dumps down in beautiful succession. Meanwhile, the other half of the pool, which is mostly separated by a wall, gets deeper for older patrons to enjoy.

If this was all there was, SPAR would still be a great public pool, but the area opposite the toddler pool connects to a lazy river that flows in an amoeba-like outline with two wading pools in between, allowing parents to kick back while their kids float around and have a great time.

In addition to this, children and adults over 42" can ride two great water slides. One requires a tube, allowing for kids to ride with parents or friends, and the other is a solo trip down to the bottom.

Parking is free, admission is $5 for adults and $4 for kids, and snacks inside are equivalent to convenience store prices, making SPAR a great choice to spend the better part of a day trip.

Winkydoo's Malt Shop is the Best Choice for Lunch

After the trip to SPAR and before getting on the road, families must go to Winkydoo's Malt Shop. Winkydoo's is an old fashioned store reminiscent of a miniature Pop Tate's Soda Shoppe.

There, kids can indulge in hot dogs while moms and dads get what may possibly be the best burger in all of Louisiana.

Before jumping into a root beer float (which is an excellent choice) take a look on the wall and see all of the malt drinks that may never come by again so that the best choice can be made. And for those who would rather eat elsewhere, Winkydoo's may be the spot for ice cream afterward.

One great thing about Sulphur is that it's not very big, so finding Winkydoo's isn't very hard. It's a few miles from SPAR, and just down the road from the Fintastic Aquarium, which can also be fun for winter day trips or families not merely stopping through.

Winkydoo's is great for burgers and malts, but I wouldn't say it's the best place to eat in Sulphur. That would the Boiling Point.

I love Winkydoo's. It's the only place left perhaps in the US where you can get an olde fashioned malt.

As far as Sulphur, it's a great place to visit family, but I wouldn't stay there for a full vacation. There just isn't enough. The closest city is Lake Charles and it's not all that great.

After reading this, I went to WinkyDoo's for the first time in years. Thanks for reminding me about this treasure in my own backyard.
