Owning a franchise can work against an entrepreneur if the brand is not nationally recognized and does not embrace creativity.

Becoming a business owner in a franchise system is often a good thing. Many times, people can access areas of an industry they would not have been able to otherwise. But being a franchisee is not all wine and roses. In fact, there are some cases where it can be a hindrance.

A Less Expensive Franchise May Still Need to Work its System

There are often two choices in getting in on a franchise type of investment. One can either go with a very big, already established, brand, or get in on the ground floor of something new. The problem with the former is that it can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the latter involves a business that is not fully established.

While one may save money and have more opportunity with a newer franchise, there is also the likely possibility that the system in place is not yet firmly in place. This is because a system is set over time through trial and error. Dunkin' Donuts and Subway restaurants work so well because there are so many of them. The mistakes have already been made.

And for those getting in on a brand that isn't established, the question is, why pay to get into something that will not penetrate the market without extra effort. That extra effort could go into establishing one's own brand, negating the need to pay a percentage to a franchiser who has yet to offer maximum value to franchisees.

There is Little or no Flexibility in Owning a Franchise

The value of a franchise is that customers can expect consistency. They can go to an IHOP restaurant and expect to get pancakes, and the crepes will be made with a fruit filling that is far from gourmet.

This is also good for franchisees who do not want to offer anything original, but for those who do, they will be at odds with their franchiser.

Despite the fact that the proprietor of a Jenny Craig weight loss center may know that her customers would love to be able to purchase Champion sportswear, such as sports bras, shorts, and shirts, this line of products is not part of the Jenny Craig system. Weight Watchers and Curves are the same way.

Again, owning a franchise is not all bad, but there are disadvantages that entrepreneurs need to know about before getting on board with something that may work against their best business sense.

I wouldn't open a franchise and you helped confirmed my feelings. Opening a franchise these days is for suckers.

This is why I like Amway Global. It's like franchising, but without all the hassle.
